These alloys need a lot more heat to actually flow, but here’s the catch—your substrates can’t handle being baked in a hot box for an hour. You’ll ruin the parts before they’re even finished. That’s why we lean on infrared (IR) curing. It’s all about how the heat moves. Think about a convection oven like heating a room with a space heater; you have to warm up all the air before the object actually gets hot. IR is different. It’s more like stepping into the sun on a cold day. The energy hits the material directly. You can hit your target temperature in seconds. It’s fast. Really fast. And because it happens so quickly, you avoid that nightmare scenario where the edges of your PCB char or warp while the center is still barely warm. The “Green” side of things Going lead-free wasn’t just about the chemistry; it was about the power bill. IR curing takes up way less space on the floor, but the real win is the energy. Since you’re aiming the heat exactly where it needs to go, you aren’t wasting kilowatts trying to heat the entire factory floor. No combustion gases, no messy solvents. You have to spend some real time obsessing over the lamp arrays and the angles of the reflectors to make sure every single millimeter gets hit. And please, don’t skimp on the sensors. Because the heat ramp is so steep, things can go south quickly. If your PID loop isn’t dialed in, you can overshoot your temp and burn right through a thin substrate before you even realize what happened. Pair your heaters with high-response thermocouples.
